Vice President R&D

Neomed is searching for a highly experienced and skilled Vice President R&D (VP R&D) with extensive experience in sourcing and developing small molecule therapeutics across diverse therapeutic indications from lead validation through the completion of IND-enabling toxicology studies. Reporting to NEOMED’s President and CEO, and working alongside NEOMED’s Chief Medical Officer and VP Business Development, the VP R&D will be NEOMED’s trusted “drug hunter”, searching for high potential new programs, primarily sourced from Canadian academia and the biotech community. The VP R&D will be responsible for managing a team of experienced and professional project managers to bring selected programs through a progressive series of key go/no go decision points, adding increasing value so that the program can be successfully commercialized through traditional licensing and/or company creation.

NEOMED operates a virtual model of drug development, developing promising therapeutics to significant valuation inflection points by employing a large network of local and international Contract Research Organizations (CRO) for all project work. The NEOMED team has undertaken and completed projects from lead-identification through human Phase 2 Proof of Concept studies and has now successfully executed its first out-licensing of a NEOMED program. This position offers an extremely interesting challenge in an unbeatable environment at the NEOMED Ville St. Laurent campus. We are looking for an individual who shares our passion for discovering and developing new therapeutics building on the world-class scientific discoveries emanating from Canadian universities, research institutes and biotechnology companies.

1. Identify, evaluate and recommend new pipeline projects
2. Design and manage implementation of project work plans
3. Establish development candidate selection criteria
4. Maintain strong working relationshiop with a world-class Scientific Advisory Board
5. Report to the Board of Directors on R&D strategy, progress and results
6. Support Business Development efforts for NEOMED pipeline projects
7. Support and lead efforts to promote NEOMED’s reputation for both R&D/Commercialization and Campus activities

• PhD in biology, chemistry or a related discipline;
• Experience in the oncology or immunology fields important
• 10 plus years or more of successful drug development experience across multiple therapeutic areas ranging from target validation to completion of IND-enabling toxicology and related studies leading to regulatory submission
• Practical experience in designing and executing drug development programs with clear go/no go decision points
• Practical experience working with virtual/semi-virtual teams of internal, consultants and CRO’s
• Strong track record for delivering high quality candidate drugs/killing development programs at no go decision points while respecting timelines and budgets
• Experience in managing/leading R&D collaborations

• Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal and relationship-building skills;
• Documented leadership skills and ability to build and manage a dedicated and enthusiastic project team;
• Strong use of data visualization tools as well as MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both written and spoken English (Fluency in French is an asset)
• Proven ability to work under pressure and within time and resource contraints to accomplish objectives
• Large, relevant personal network across the academic milieu, for business development (in-licensing/out-licensing) and for out-sourcing (companies, consultants)
• Ability to help prioritize discovery programs based on unmet medical needs and competitive commercial potential
• Scientific passion balanced by a clear understanding of business realities
